東京音楽大学ピアノ科卒業。同大学指揮研究科修了。「プラハの春」をはじめ数々の国際コンクールで入賞。特に声楽・合唱付き作品で深い洞察力を発揮。チョン・ミョンフン、フェドセーエフなどからの絶大な信頼を受け、数多くのステージやオペラ制作に携わる。

　2008年には、ペーテル・ブノワ《盛儀のミサ》を日本初演、その功績によりペーテル・ブノワ財団より名誉称号が授与された。またプラハ交響楽団への客演、プラハにてモーツァルトのレクイエムを指揮し成功を収めるなど活動範囲を海外にも広げている。

　2012年には長岡にて、カール・ジェンキンス《平和への道程》を全曲指揮。立案から4年をかけて実現へ導いたその情熱は、演奏においても「合唱を懸命に整え、かつ高みに導かんと奮闘する船橋のタクト。」と高く評された。

　2013/14年シーズンはモラヴィア・フィルへ客演、ベルリンにてYACOB(Young Asian Chamber Orchestra Berlin)を指揮。国内では都響、東京フィル、大阪フィル、大阪響等への客演をはじめ、東京とベルリンを拠点に国内外で精力的な活動を展開している。

　ライフワークとして教育にも力を注ぎ、音楽鑑賞教室のプロデュースや各地でのワークショップに数多く招聘されている。東京音楽大学大学院講師、長岡市芸術文化振興財団音楽アドヴァイザーなどを歴任。

　現在、宮城学院女子大学音楽科教授として後進の指導も行っている。

Yosuke Funabashi graduated from the Tokyo College of Music, where he studied piano, and completed his post-graduate studies in conducting at the same university. In 2000, he conducted the Prague Radio Symphony Orchestra in the 52nd “Prague Spring” International Music Competition and received an honorary mention from the jury.

Particularly in the areas of opera and choral music, Funabashi has demonstrated exceptional insight and sensitivity. He has earned the great trust of the conductors such as Myung-Whun Chung and Vladimir Fedoseyev, and participated in many stage and opera productions. Funabashi made his opera conducting debut in 1999 with a performance of Mozart’s Die Zauberflote, which press reviews likened to a top-class German opera production.

During the 2005/2006 season, he conducted Verdi’s Requiem at Musikverein Grosser Saal in Vienna, as well as many concerts in Japan, including a concert at the Aichi World Expo. In the 2008/2009 season, he conducted the Japan premiere of Peter Benoit’s Hoogmis, and for this achievement was awarded an honorary title by the Peter Benoit Foundation. He continues to expand his overseas activities, which have included an appearance as guest conductor with the Prague Symphony Orchestra, and a well received performance of Mozart’s Requiem in Prague. In the 2011/2012 season, in Nagaoka on December 5 he will conduct the first concert in Japan of the complete version of Karl Jenkins’ The Armed Man : A Mass for Peace. With other upcoming guest appearances including concerts with the Tokyo Metropolitan Symphony Orchestra, Tokyo Philharmonic Orchestra, Tokyo Symphony Orchestra, and Osaka Philharmonic Orchestra, the continued development of his career is highly anticipated.

Funabashi serves as music advisor for the Nagaoka City Foundation for Art and Culture Promotion. He also produces various projects including educational program which have been the focus of much attention.
